Oxygen transmitters qualify the amount of oxygen in a sample. The third most abundant element on Earth, oxygen is critical to life, integral to combustion, and a powerful corrosive that can contaminate or create hazardous conditions. Knowing how much oxygen is in a sample is critical for optimizing furnace efficiency, monitoring explosive atmospheres, determining the purity of process gases, and more.
pH and ORP are important parameters of water quality and a wide range of process applications depend upon the ability to measure and control each. Both pH and ORP represent types of ion activity in liquids—pH measures hydrogen ion activity while ORP represents the potential transfer of electrons between chemicals or chemical compounds. Though measuring very different things, both pH and ORP share a close relationship and are often included together while discussing water quality.
Water quality meters measure acidity (pH), dissolved oxygen (DO), oxidizing-reduction potential (ORP), and various other factors that help the user understand the quality and composition of the sample. Water quality is essential for many obvious reasons, but it is critical in maintaining machine health as well.
Dissolved oxygen meters use an electrochemical, polarographic, amperometric, galvanic, or optical sensor to measure the amount of gaseous oxygen dissolved in a water sample. DO is an important water quality parameter that effects marine life, the taste of drinking water, and the corrosiveness of a water sample. Common applications include groundwater remediation, wastewater, aquariums, and fish hatcheries.
Turbidity meters measure the cloudiness, or turbidity, of a liquid caused by suspended solids in the sample. Turbidity is an essential measure of water quality that can have important implications for drinking water, environmental health, and the quality assurance of foods and other products.
Conductivity sensors measure the ability of a water sample to conduct an electrical current. Pure water is a poor conductor of electricity but adding ions from dissolved salts and inorganic materials such as alkalis, chlorides, sulfides and carbonate compounds increases the conductivity of a sample making conductivity an important water quality measurement.
