The Background: Our customer is an aerospace company that tests rocket engines used in satellites. Once a satellite is launched, these engines are used to position the satellite into the correct orbit. The very high cost of the satellites means the engines have to function perfectly, without failure, every time. The customer seeks a means to accurately measure and verify the structural integrity, system operations, and sea level thrust of these rocket engines.
The Problem: The testing procedure involves restraining the rocket and directing the exhaust safely toward the open atmosphere. A range of parameters is then measured in gage, absolute and differential pressures to ensure that once in space, there are no failures. It is imperative that measurements are accurate and that the pressure transmitter is suitable for the extreme test conditions.
