Why Now Is the Time to Modernize Water Management Systems

For businesses and municipalities, reliable access to water has traditionally been treated as a relatively predictable part of operating infrastructure. That assumption is becoming increasingly difficult to make. Hotter summers, prolonged droughts, and greater evaporation are putting additional pressure on reservoirs, rivers, and groundwater supplies at the same time that communities and industries continue to demand reliable access to water. 

As water supplies become less predictable, state and local governments are likely to face growing pressure to introduce stricter conservation requirements, reporting standards, and usage restrictions. In April 2026, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation reported that Colorado River system storage had fallen to roughly 36% of capacity following prolonged drought, record-low winter snowpack, and unusually warm conditions. By July, the agency's median forecast put 2026 inflow into Lake Powell at only 3.5 million acre-feet, or about 36% of average. 

These conditions are already affecting how one of America's most important water systems is managed, with reduced releases from Lake Powell and shortage conditions affecting Lake Mead. For businesses and municipalities elsewhere, the Colorado River should not simply be viewed as a regional problem. It demonstrates how quickly declining water availability can turn conservation and accurate measurement from a sustainability initiative into an operational necessity.

Europe Faces the New Realities of Water Management 

Similar problems are emerging across Europe, showing that water scarcity is hardly unique to the American Southwest. During the summer of 2026, extreme heat and drought pushed major European waterways to unusually low levels, disrupting shipping, agriculture, hydropower generation, and industrial operations. Nearly three-quarters of England was experiencing drought by mid-August, accompanied by water restrictions and mounting pressure on public supplies, agriculture, and the environment. Elsewhere, Romania restricted agricultural access to irrigation water, the Netherlands declared a water shortage, and several Greek islands declared drought emergencies. The lesson is increasingly clear: water availability can no longer be assumed simply because a region has historically had adequate supplies.

How Can Municipalities and Other Entities Get Ahead of Water Management Challenges and Save Costs?

Waiting for new regulations to take effect before modernizing water infrastructure could also make those upgrades considerably more expensive and difficult to complete. If thousands of municipalities, industrial facilities, commercial properties, and agricultural operations are suddenly required to improve water metering and monitoring at the same time, demand for flow meters, level sensors, leak detection systems, automated controls, and related equipment could surge. That can mean longer lead times, limited product availability, higher installation costs, and greater competition for qualified contractors.
