The Fuji Electric Portaflow-C FSC-3 Ultrasonic Flow Meter is a compact and light-weight flow meter, offering high performance and easy operation for the noninvasive measurement of flow rates in pipes.
Utilizing the latest electronics and digital signal processing technologies, the Portaflow-C offers high accuracy, quick response time, and outstanding anti-bubble characteristics. In addition to standard flow measurements, the Portaflow-C is capable of heat quantity measurement allowing simple management for heating and cooling applications.
The Portaflow can be used with various types of detectors applicable for small to large diameter pipe and low to high temperature. This flow meter is designed for 12 hours of continuous operation with its own built-in battery which is rechargeable in 3 hours with the supplied power adapter. An SD memory card allows flow, velocity and total data to be stored for later recall. A universal USB port permits communication with a PC to facilitate configuring the Portaflow-C as well as saving and reading data files, and a 4.7 inch color graphic display creates an easy-to-use operator interface.

Transit Time Ultrasonic Flow Meters – Technology Explained
Transit Time ultrasonic flow meters are well-suited for relatively clean fluids with low to moderate aeration. These meters operate by comparing the time for an ultrasonic signal to travel with the flow (downstream) against the time for an ultrasonic signal to travel against the flow (upstream). The difference between these transit times is proportional to the flow, and the flow meter converts this information to flow rate and total. With this technology, the transducers are mounted on the outside of the pipe, providing tremendous advantages over more traditional and invasive flow measurement instruments such as magmeters, vortex meters, and turbine flow meters. These benefits include no system downtime for installation, no system contamination, no pressure drop, no moving parts, and no risk of leaks. This product is virtually maintenance free.

Campus HVAC Monitoring and Efficiency
The Background: Our customer is a university that wants to improve the efficiency of the hydronic heating and cooling systems in their dormitories.
The Problem: The hydronic heating and cooling systems were installed more than 30 years ago when not much attention was paid to energy efficiency. There’s now a push to get higher efficiency out of antiquated systems.
The Solution: The campus maintenance department already uses clamp-on ultrasonic meters to spot check flows in both cooling and heating water pipes as a means to see if the pumps are operating as expected. We recommend they upgrade to the Fuji Electric Portaflow-C which can interface with a BTU monitoring kit consisting of two RTD temperature sensors to measure the water temperature on both the supply side (T1) and return side (T2) of the boiler.
The temperature difference (T1 minus T2) equates to the energy lost in the form of heat to the building. This delta temperature when tabulated with the water flow rates indicates the use of energy over time. This allows the maintenance department to map and log the energy use over time to identify trends and problem areas, information that can be used to improve efficiency without shutting down or interfering with the system.
Troubleshooting De-ionized Water Pipeline Problems
The Background: Our customer is a semiconductor manufacturing facility with two identical pipelines transporting de-ionized water to identical machines. Though all things are equal, the performance of the two machines is not. The facility requires a means of finding the issue with the flow to the underperforming machine.
The Problem: The customer cannot simply shut down the production line to install traditional, inline water meters to locate the problem.
The Solution: We recommended a Fuji Electric Portaflow-C ultrasonic meter to locate the problem. The Portaflow-C can be quickly and easily clamped onto pipes without disrupting the flow or necessitating any modification to the pipe. Although the customer’s PLC showed that all appropriate valves were open, the Portaflow-C helped them determine that one of their valves was not operating correctly and was restricting flow. They were able to schedule a shut down for that one machine and replace the valve. The Portaflow-C is now used to spot check the customer’s other flow meters to ensure that they are reading correctly.
