Description

The Megger KC Series test leads provide a complete and convenient solution to the problem of finding reliable test leads that are long enough for testing the continuity of lightning protection conductors in wind turbines.

The lead sets consist of two test leads. The first is a 5 m cable fitted with a duplex handspike for probing the lightning receptors on the tips of the turbine blades. The second cable is either, a 30 m, 60 m or 100 m cable, fitted with a large robust Kelvin clip, specially designed to offer ease of use while providing the consistently reliable connections needed to ensure accurate and repeatable test results.

The long cable is wound onto a high quality, robust cable reel fitted with a friction brake to avoid tangles whilst paying out.

This lead set is intended to measurement the resistance of the lightning protection circuit of a wind turbine, either in part in a production environment, or fully assembled during commissioning, maintenance, or following repair. This lead set is designed to be connected to any instruments in the Megger 10A DLRO range or the Megger BT51. However, for outside use the DLRO10HD is recommended due to it robustness and high IP rating.

Test Leads for Wind Towers

The Background: Our customer is an independent power producer that maintains a number of small windfarms and seeks a reliable means of testing that each windmill is protected from lightning strikes.

The Problem: Due to their size and the materials from which they’re made, windmills are highly susceptible to lightning strikes. Lightning is, in fact, the leading cause of downtime and catastrophic damage can occur if there’s not a good path from blade tips to the ground.

Due to the large distance between blade tips and ground as well as potential damage to conductors from blade flex, there isn’t an easy way to make sure that lightning travels through the lightning protection system rather than into the sensitive electronics.

Necessary periodic testing of the lightning protection system requires extra-long, high integrity test leads, but even the best leads with such length have such high resistance that they need to be used in conjunction with a high wattage, low-resistance ohmmeter.

The Solution: We recommended Megger KC series test leads paired with a Megger DLRO10HD ohmmeter. KC series test leads have been developed with turbine manufactures to create a Megger system solution. The leads are designed to test from blade tip to root of a grounding system and are fitted to a reel for ease of use.
