Description
The Waygate Technologies CL5 ultrasonic thickness gauge (formerly Krautkramer CL 5) offers a full range of functionality in an easy to use, compact, and rugged package. Three soft keys directly under the display activate the functions shown on the display menus. Four directional keys help make menu changes and navigation of the text entry screen simple and efficient.
The graphical display presents the user with seven different operation modes. The user can select Normal, Minimum Scan, Maximum Scan, Differential/Rate of Reduction, Thk+A-Scan (option), Velocity (option) or Quality View. The CL5 uses a programmable data recorder for easy set up of data files from the PC. The SD Card memory system places all the data recording and set-up information on a removable SD memory card. The files are formatted allowing the user to drag and drop files when plugged directly into the PC. Other data such as digital photographs can also be stored on the same SD card. The CL5 allows direct connection to the PC, using a serial or USB port (with optional cable).

Here's how some of our customers use this product...
Quality Control of Precision Anodized Shock Tubes
The Background: The customer manufactures shock absorber casings and needs an accurate way to measure the thickness of the casings as part of their quality control protocols.
The Problem: The casing are comprised of cylinders with a 2-inch outside diameter and walls that are nominally 0.09 inches thick. The curved nature of the casings makes it tricky to get uniformly accurate readings as the transducer doesn’t sit flat on the surface.
The Solution: We suggested the GE CL5 precision thickness gauge with a 15Mhz standard delay line transducer. The plastic delay lines are the key to the solution on curved surfaces as they can be finely sanded down to match the outer curvature of the shock casing. This will give the tip of the delay line a matching contour for more reliable thickness readings.
Spot Checking the Thickness of Rolled Steel
The Background: The customer is an industrial manufacturer who needs to spot check the thickness of rolled steel.
The Problem: The primary needs of the customer include an instrument that is quick and easy to use along with x.xxxx resolution.
The Solution: The GE Inspection Technologies CL5 ultrasonic thickness gauge coupled with an Alpha DFR delay line probe has a range of 0.007 to 1.0" range in mild steel along with resolution to 0.0001” allowing the customer to easily validate their range of product thickness.
Verifying the Face Thickness of a Golf Driver
The Background: A major sporting goods manufacturer needs an instrument capable of measuring the thickness of the face of golf clubs as part of their product development and quality control efforts.
The Problem: The customer needs to make one sided measurements on very thin alloy finished goods.
The Solution: We recommended the GE Inspection Technologies CL5 ultrasonic thickness gauge paired with the GE Inspection Technologies ALPHA-2 DFR Delay Line Probe, which allowed for accurate one sided measurements a crossed the face of the club to verify variable face thickness. The CL5 can read from 0.007 to 1.0 inch in mild steel (Longitudinal Velocity .23 in/µsec) with 0.0000 inch resolution.
