Instrumart ranked first at the 2023 ‘Best Places to Work in Vermont’ honors Wednesday night, our fifth time earning the honor awarded by Vermont Business Magazine.

The award was launched in 2006 to recognize businesses that have created an outstanding culture for employees, determined in large part by the people working there. It is an honor just  to be nominated among an exceptional group of local employers, and to be awarded the top position shows Instrumart’s efforts to carry a principal value of putting people first have been successful.

What set Instrumart apart in the process this year? We have continued to offer benefits that center the importance of a strong work-life balance and welcoming office culture, even as the number of employees here continues to grow.

“A lot of companies say they are customer-focused,” said Brian Leffler, president of Instrumart. “Instrumart is proudly an employee-focused company; by taking excellent care of our employees, our employees in turn come to work happy and motivated to take excellent care of our customers.”

For us, taking excellent care of employees includes providing a 100% employer-paid health care plan, flexible time off policy (with additional time available for volunteering), a free gym membership for families, competitive 401k match program, and optional work from home scheduling.

Instrumart also provides situational benefits for employees. That includes employer-backed college courses to help individuals grow their career or start on a new path and a “Babies at Work” policy that pairs with more traditional maternity leave benefits to provide added stability for new parents.

“Some people ask me what I do as president of a company that wins this type of award,” Leffler said. “I tell them that I am doing a good job taking care of 70 families and that is my priority. Everything else is important, but secondary.”

What’s the criteria?

The “Best Places to Work in Vermont” award is designed to recognize and honor places of employment that offer great benefit to both its employees and the state’s economy.

To be considered, companies must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Have at least 15 full or part-time employees in Vermont
  • Have a physical operation in Vermont
  • Are a publicly or privately-held organization
  • Have been in business for at least one year

The final vote is considered in two parts. Approximately 80% of the total evaluation is determined by an anonymous employee survey distributed in the months before the award. The final 20% comes from a committee that evaluates each company’s policies, practices, and demographics.

In 2023, Instrumart finished first out of 37 small businesses (15 to 99 U.S. employees) that qualified for the award.
