Much more than a big zoo for fish, the New England Aquarium (NEAQ) has been working on the front lines of marine conservation and research since 1860. But there’s a reason why over a million people visit the aquarium annually: it’s a fun, informational center for families to immerse themselves in sea life.

Here for More Than Fins and Gills

Jason, one of our Application Engineers, didn't go there for the fish, seals, and penguins. He went to talk about the things that the public doesn't get to see. Everything that goes on behind the scenes to keep the aquarium up and running. NEAQ is a customer of a customer, which means they are our customer, too. They rely on a number of brands like Fuji Electric, GF Signet, Rosemount, and Seametrics to keep their operation running smoothly and efficiently.

Lets Talk Tuna

Jason met with the NEAQ Facilities Manager, who has been responsible for adding instrumentation to the aquarium. They spent some time looking over the industrial setup behind the Giant Ocean Tank. They have two meters that are not providing the most accurate readings because they are located too close to a pump and the flow pattern can be choppy and erratic.

Since they do not have a long enough run of straight pipe leading to this flow meter Jason suggested that they switch over to a Krohne WATERFLUX 3000 Electromagnetic Flow Meter. The Krohne WATERFLUX 3000 has a unique interior construction with a rectangular and reduced-size cross-section. Because of this unique design, the flow velocity and flow profile are optimized within the rectangular and reduced cross-section and the uneven flow rate is drastically reduced. So that means this meter can be installed directly behind an elbow or pump in the pipe without straight inlet or outlet lengths.
