Monitoring Movement of a Bridge During Reconstruction
The Background: A construction company is rebuilding a bridge and they need to monitor any movement of the bridge while work is in progress.
The Problem: Due to safety concerns with the location of the bridge, the company needs to monitor for any movement greater than 0.4˚ in any direction. If such movement occurs audible and visual alarms need to be activated to let people know to evacuate certain areas.
The Solution: The Jewell Instruments Tuff Tilt 420 with a biaxial configuration captures movement both up and down and side to side and provides the accuracy needed by the customer. The unit contains outputs for alarms.
Monitoring Stress on a Concrete Containment Wall
The Background: Our customer is a mining company that routinely dumps material into a holding area surrounded by a concrete containment wall. They seek a way to ensure that the mass of the material does not cause unsafe stress on the containment wall which could cause it to collapse.
The Problem: The customer deposits a large amount of material in these containment areas which are in close proximity to access roads and work areas. The customer is concerned that it might be difficult to tell if the concrete walls become overstressed.
The Solution: We suggested the Jewell Instruments C801 Tuff Tilt 420 Tiltmeter which offers a gravity referenced sensor that delivers high dynamic range and the best resolution of any sensor in its class. The Tuff Tilt will provide constant monitoring to see if the containment walls begin to bulge, at which point steps can be taken to mitigate the danger.
