Turbines

Turbines are mechanical devices that rotate in response to fluid flow, thus converting the energy of that flow into useful work. Though there are many types of turbines, the most common are steam turbines used for the generation of electricity and gas turbines which power jet aircraft.

Steam and gas turbines are very expensive and complex machines that operate under conditions that can be tough, necessitating a robust inspection schedule to reduce the potential for failure and to minimize downtime. Additionally, depending upon the use of the turbine, they may be subject to inspection and maintenance schedules as determined by regulatory agencies. Steam turbines, for example, must meet API 611/612 standards while gas turbines used in aircraft are subject to FAA regulations.
