Description

The Rosemount 5408 radar level transmitter uses two-wire FMCW technology to deploy a continuous echo to maximize radar signal strength and produce a more robust and reliable measurement. Delivering ease-of-use at every touch point, the Rosemount 5408 uses an intuitive software interface to guide the operator through installation, commissioning, proof-testing, and maintenance. Safety certified to IEC 61508 for SIL 2 applications, the Rosemount 5408: SIS reduces cost of risk, increases efficiency, and protects people and the environment.

Applications

Here's how some of our customers use this product...

Level Monitoring and Controlling of High-Fructose Corn Syrup

The Background: Our customer is a food service company looking for a highly reliable, accurate, non-contact level control of food-grade corn syrup in a large tank.

The Problem: The corn syrup is stored in a large tank where it is heated so it will flow better as it’s pumped to production areas where it’s used. As the corn syrup is used, it’s important more be added so there is always an available supply. The level meter needs to be food grade and compatible with the temperature, pressure and condensation found in this application.

The Solution: We recommended the Rosemount 5408 radar level transmitter with a corrosion-resistant, PTFE process seal antenna and a Tri-clamp fitting. This option has an operating pressure of up to 363 psig and an operating temperature of up to 392°F, well within application ranges. The transmitter also has in-built diagnostics for detecting a dirty antenna.

Preventing Basement Flooding

The Background: Our customer is a university maintenance department seeking a means of removing water from basement storage and laboratory facilities in case of flooding such as if the sprinkler system is activated.

The Problem: The storage and laboratory facilities contain a variety of radioactive and poisonous/corrosive substances. Should flooding reach those substances it would create a dangerous situation and a costly clean-up.

The Solution: We recommended the Rosemount 5408 radar level transmitter with SIS certification. The 5408 can detect rising flood waters and activate pumps to remove the water before the dangerous substances are exposed. The 5408 includes an analog output that could be connected to the customer’s DCS as well as PTFE or PEEK seals with chemically-resistant O-rings. It also meets the customer’s need for SIL2/SIL3 certification.
