The Alicat Scientific Whisper MW series mass flow meter is an accurate, versatile, dependable and cost effective solution to measuring gas flow. Combining Alicat's innovative laminar flow technology with low-drop proportional control valves and high-sensitivity differential pressure sensors, the Whisper Series features fullscale pressure drops as low as 3.6 mbar, or 0.052 psi, making them particularly well-suited to applications that have minimal differential pressure availability, such as leak checking, gas analysis and totalizing, or natural gas applications.
The Alicat Scientific's Whisper MW Series mass flow meter was designed to exceed the requirements that customers place on mass flow meters. Flow ranges are available from 0.5 standard cubic centimeters per minute to 500 standard liters per minute with a 200:1 turndown ratio. Basic accuracy is ±0.8% of reading ±0.2% of full scale. Calibrated and ready for use with 20 gases and 10 gas blends, The Whisper MW series has a remarkably fast start-up time and a response time of just 10 milliseconds.
The Alicat Scientifics Whisper MW Series mass flow meter is an extremely versatile instrument. In addition to mass flow measurements, the MW Series also measures pressure, temperature and volumetric flow, meaning fewer instruments to buy and install. The MW series meter can also be equipped with an Alicat 9V battery pack to make a stand alone secondary calibration standard or flow verification meter. Alicat's patented technology allows its mass flow meters to have very few moving parts. All of the internal components are fixed in place resulting in very little physical change inside the mass flow meter. Little physical change in the flow cavity means higher rates of consistency and repeatability.
Alicat Scientific Whisper MW Series mass flow meters were designed to be used as a stand-alone device. All measured parameters are displayed in real time on the digital display. Any measured parameter can be brought to the center of the screen. The push button interface allows easy configuration of the meter without the need for computers, complicated software or scripts. The MW Series features Gas Select which allows users to select from 30 gases and gas blends via the display or through the RS-232 interface. Remote displays are also available. Whisper MW Series mass flow meters are equipped with multiple analog outputs in addition to the RS-232 digital output.

Rapid Breathing Research
The Background: Our customer is a research laboratory that is redesigning a machine used to simulate human breathing. This machine is used in a number of research studies. The customer needs a flow meter capable of measuring the simulated breathing of this machine.
The Problem: The application requires a flow meter for air that offers a wide range, fast response time and low pressure loss.
The Solution: We suggested the Alicat MW series which is especially well suited as it meets all of the above requirements. With a 200:1 turndown ratio and 10ms output response times, the team can collect hundreds of flow data points through each cycle of simulated breathing. The MW utilizes fewer laminar plates than other differential pressure flow meters which reduces the gas restriction and pressure loss. The pressure loss can be further reduced by oversizing the meter body for the application. This potentially comes at the cost of range and accuracy at the low end of the flow range. In this case, the customer didn't need to see flows down into the single digits so over sizing the flow body was employed. To capture the data, the customer will be using Alicat's very own Flow Vision SC software. The meter is digitally connected to a PC and the software can configure the unit and record output data. The data can then be easily exported to other software suites for further processing.
